Market Research – Online Surveys Can Help You to Determine What Customers Really Want

Starting new businesses and developing new products is dependent on what customers want or need. You need to know what appeals to the customer and you need to know how much they would be willing to pay to have the products they want. The only way to successfully determine what will sell is by doing market research.

There are several ways to determine through market research what appeals to customers. Depending on the product you are selling, in store surveys can be very helpful. If you are able to set up an area where customers can test samples of your product, you will be able to get opinions of those products and question them about possible improvements. You can find out what new products they may want. The questions you choose to ask your market research group can tell you a lot about the dynamics of your target group.

You can also set up focus groups for market research. You will need a group of people who represent your target group and you will need a moderator. You will be introducing products and getting the groups opinion and then you will be able to ask questions about products they may want or need. In this setting the group will be able to discuss what they like about specific products and they can discuss possible future products. The results of the focus group could be very interesting, because you are getting a group answer. Allowing people to have this discussion could be very productive.

However, online surveys may be the most effective form of market research, because your customers are in relaxed atmospheres and they have time to consider each question carefully. It gives the customer an opportunity to give you answers that are honest and well thought out. So, choose your questions carefully. Be as direct as possible. Think about what you need to know. For instance, you could begin with a specific product; ask your customers how difficult it is for them to get the product. And ask if they would want to change anything about the product, ask if the price is a good bargain for the money. Be careful that the questions you ask are not two part questions; be sure that they can be answered with the choices you provide, otherwise, your customer will get frustrated with the survey.

When you are giving a survey, you want as many people to participate as possible.  To stimulate interest, include a promotional offer with the survey, give away something free to the first ten people to complete the survey. But do not neglect the other people who are giving you their time, you could offer coupons for discounts on your items, and send them a promotional gift, something with your logo on it, with a purchase. They are helping you with valuable market research, be sure that you show your appreciation. And do not forget to do the follow up to the survey, let your customers know how their information helped. Giving updates on market research will increase your brand recognition and stimulate customer loyalty.
