What Are Affiliate Programs?

You may or may not have already heard the term “affiliate program” but never understood what it really meant. You may see a link at the bottom of many of your favorite web sites that refer to their affiliate program. Many others are constantly hearing that phrase, especially those who work online from home, as affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways for people to make money online. But what are affiliate programs anyway? What do they do? Who do they help? You may even be wondering how you can get in the business of affiliate marketing.

The main idea behind affiliate programs is basically “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”. The companies that offer affiliate programs realize that even though they have to pay out money to get people to help them, they are reaping benefits that more than make up for what is being paid out. It is formally defined as an online based marketing strategy in which a company forms an affiliate relationship with a partner, gives the partner an affiliate link to post on the partner website, and then rewards that partner each and every time potential customers are brought to the main company from the affiliate link. This is all in an effort to increase traffic to the company’s main website and hopefully increase sales. Now you may be able to understand why a company would give you a commission just to send people to their site; because sales are absolutely vital to a business. If people stop buying, the business will be doomed.

A great example of successful affiliate programs and marketing is the typical blogger. Many bloggers these days have their own web site dedicated to the blogs they post. They may notice one day that they have a lot of extra space in and around the web site, and could fill that space with some links to sites that are relevant to what they normally blog about. So the join the affiliate program of one of their favorite companies. Upon joining the program, the blogger receives a simple code that they simply copy and paste into their web site code that displays an ad for the company’s web site. Now, anyone who views the blog will see the link, the odds that they will click on it are good because it is relevant to what the blog is about. When the customer clicks on the link, the company web site recognizes the individual link the visitor came from and the blogger receives a commission. If a sale is made, the blogger also receives a commission. It should be noted that not every company will pay you commission just for the traffic.

The bottom line is that affiliate programs and affiliate marketing create a win-win environment. The company is reaping the benefits of increased traffic to their site and the potential for more sales, the customer is reaping the benefits of finding a product or service that they might have missed otherwise, and the affiliate reaps the benefits of getting a commission without having to do much work to make it happen.
